El Sabio Tapas Bar & Restaurant
What motivated Hungarian chef Attila Vanko and his wife Viki to move to England and open a Spanish tapas bar may remain a mystery, but the result of their efforts is the fun and vibrant El Sabio restaurant in Winchester’s Eastgate Street. Always filled with animated diners, this family-run restaurant has live salsa nights on the first Thursday of every month, and the former Mash Tun pub has been successfully converted into a bright and rustic Spanish-themed escape from the hustle and bustle. We love El Sabio’s orange walls, wooden floors, blackboard menus and potted palms, and the space is suitable for events and business dining as well as nights out with friends and family.

Hotel du Vin & Bistro
The Bistro at the Hotel du Vin in Winchester is exactly where the whole stylish, witty, wine-loving hotel group began, in one of the town’s most important Georgian buildings, dating from 1715. The Bistro offers a menu rooted in classic European cuisine with a contemporary edge augmented with daily additions from head chef Matt Sussex. The Hotel du Vin’s famous funky-chic décor is in evidence here with wooden tables and chairs, open fireplace, period paneling, and collections of wine bottles everywhere. Zizzi
Italian restaurant chain Zizzi opened the doors of its very first branch in London's Chiswick in 1999. Now there are over 100 branches, all decorated in an appealing contemporary style. Wood-fired ovens, open kitchens and modern interior design with locally influenced art features make for a vibrant atmosphere. As for the food, they serve up a variety of traditional Italian dishes including all the usual suspects: salads, antipasti, pasta, pizza, calzone, risotto as well as fish and meat mains and desserts. What Zizzi really pride themselves on is sourcing good quality ingredients; salads are dressed with white balsamic vinegar from Modena, for example, and offer Goddess Olives, a variety known for their firm flesh and nutty flavour. The modestly priced wine list is dominated by Italian wines, starting at £13.45 for a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Winchester's Zizzi occupies the old Jacob & Johnson building, which dates back to the 17th century. Diners will enjoy the beautifully restored interior, complete with original features.
